​1932 Miller 308 c.i. DOHC V-8

   ​ln 1932, Harry Miller and Leo Goossen designed and built two revolutionary (for their time) four-wheel-drive racing cars. Powering these cars was a new 308-c.i., twin-cam V-8. Goossen employed the same revolutionary downdraft porting arrangement with this engine that was used for Miller's 303-c.i. V-1 6. Drive from the V-B came through a Miller 3-speed gearbox to a center differential from which power was distributed to the deDion front and rear axles suspended on quarter elliptic springs.

​   The Four Wheel Drive (FWD) Company in Clintonville, Wl, purchased one of the two four-wheel-drive cars to race at the 1932 lndy 500 as a promotional tool for the company, and Harry Miller entered the second car under his name.The cars raced unsuccessfully at lndy and elsewhere in the early 1930s, and had no opportunity to demonstrate what they could do. ln 1934, Peter de Paolo raced one of the 4WD cars in the Grand Prix of Tripolil (finishing 8th in a field of 26 cars) and in the Avus Grand Prix in Berlin.

​   That car was eventually broken up and the parts scattered about. Mauri Rose drove the other 4WD car to win the 1936 FvAA Championship. That car ran at lndianapolis as late as 1938, and was raced successfully in hill climbs after World War ll.

• ​According to Chuck Davis: "This V-8 Miller came out of a 4 wheel drive car. It is complete. Rebuilt in 1948 by the Marchesi Brothers. It's one of the few 91 engines that ran naturally aspirated. It doesn't have a super charger on it. These carburetors are off of a naturally aspirated 122 from 1923.​​

• Harry Miller & Leo Goossen designed and built two revolutionary 4WD race cars for the 1932 Indy 500. Powering these cars were this engine and the one built just like it. 
• They had an aluminum alloy crankcase, cast iron integral cylinder head/block and a double overhead camshaft design.
• The cars raced at Indy and elsewhere in the early 1930's with little success:
  • One car was later driven to win the 1936 AAA Championship
  • The other 4WD car was driven in the 1934 Grand Prix of Tripoli and in the Avus Grand Prix in Berlin
• The Miller 308 c.i. engine was the first V-8 with double overhead camshafts.
