​   Joe Lencki built this car in 1938 for the new rules coming into effect for the AAA National Championship.  Since 1930, AAA regulations had called for all cars to provide for a riding mechanic.  The riding mechanic would not be a requirement starting in 1938, so many new cars were being built.
The car acquired the name, “The Pup”, because of its smaller stature than the Lencki #8.  At many races, Joe would enter both cars.

 The Pup made its debut at the mile track in Springfield, Illinois, on August 20, 1938.  With Jimmy Snyder the driver, the Lencki Pup finished 11th in the 100-mile race.  Snyder won the Syracuse (New York) 100-miler on September 9, 1938, for the Pup’s only victory.  It raced twice in the Indy 500, with Floyd Davis finishing 20th in 1940, and Joie Chitwood recording a 14th in 1941.

   It was with this car that Chitwood first installed a seatbelt in an Indy car for the 1941 running of the 500.  The car bounced around so much on the bricks that Chitwood could not keep his foot on the gas pedal without a seatbelt to hold him in his seat.
