303 Roadster Revolutionary for the time the Bell 303 mid-engine roadster would help shape the future of drag racing. It was the 50’s and the “Car of Tomorrow” had flopped in 48’ and the Volkswagon had not taken off in the states. Americans weren’t a rear engine culture like Europe and the concept was still new and unproven in their minds, especially in racing applications. Cars like Ollie Morris Smokin’ White owl were rare breeds in that era.
None of this debate concerned Reid Pate, his brother Don, or their friend, Bill Crissman, from Compton, California. The trio reasoned that if more weight could be concentrated on a car's rear wheels, they'd get plenty of traction. So they decided to build the Bell 303 rear engine modified roadster.
