Some of the best drivers of their generation qualified this car for the Indy 500 five times from 1939-1947, and raced it on AAA's dirt tracks around the Midwest through the summer of 1948.
400 hp 265-c.i. DOHC 6-cyl engine, with 4 valves per cylinder, was designed by the legendary Leo Goossen to Joe Lencki's specifications, and built at Offenhauser Manufacturing Co. in L.A. It's the only 6-cyl race engine Offenhauser ever built. Rigling Brothers hand-formed the all-aluminum body. Fairing over the front suspension helped car reach 124 mph. Frank Kurtis built the car's fuel and oil tanks. Suspension utilized conventional Ford axles and springs. This was the first car to race at Indy with four-wheel disc brakes. They were mechanically actuated (not hydraulic). |
