​     This car was built by Bruce Bromme and made its debut in California Racing Association (CRA) in 1962.  It went on to become one of the most recognizable sprinters in short track history.  Named “Andy Gump,” in honor of its unusual nose and grill it went on to win more than 30 main events in the hands of Allen Heath, Paul Jones, Don Hawley and Dean Thompson.  Andy won the CRA Owners Championship for Bromme in 1965 with Jones, the younger brother of Indy 500 champ, Parnelli Jones, turning the wheel.

​    The car was powered by a 270-c.i. Offenhauser for its first 11 years of competition.  In 1973 Bromme installed a Chevy and Andy barely missed a beat. Jones retired part way through 1974 and Bromme installed a young Dean Thompson in the seat. ​

    Thompson won his first, of a record 103 CRA main events, in Andy Gump on April, 27, 1974.  Following the 1977 season Andy Gump was retired from competition after 16 seasons as one of the top sprint cars in CRA.  The car remained in the hands of Bromme and he restored the car back to its1966 configuration. 
 
     Paul Jones, the younger brother of Parnelli Jones, Paul’s best finish in CRA competition was second in the drivers point in 1965.  He drove several cars during his career, but his best results were in Andy Gump.  Although he only won three feature in 1965, his consistent driving helped Bruce Bromme win the car owners title.  Jones had one very unusual hobby, other than car racing; raising and racing homing pigeons!
 
Lil’ Gump
     Bruce Bromme designed and built this Quarter-midget in the late 1950s for his son, Bruce Jr.  Bromme built the entire car including the hand-formed body.  Family friend, Dean Thompson also drove it quite a bit.  Thompson and Bromme Jr. both won many races in this car.  California was a hotbed for Quarter-midgets during this time.  Additional California drivers who started their careers in these tiny cars include, Rick Goudy, Chuck Gurney, Mike Mosley, Bobby Olivero, Sleepy Tripp, Buster Venard, Bruce Walkup and Rip Williams.
