Tom Lieb designed the Scat engine in 1990, by cutting a Chevy V-8 in half and using the front four cylinders.  It was in response to the increasing price of a Volkswagen engine for midget racing. The thought was that this engine used enough Chevy aftermarket part to make it a reasonable alternative.

     It features a 4.125” bore X 3.0” stroke, for 163 cubic inch displacement.  The engine produces 320 hp @ 7300 rpm.

     A KSE water pump and a Barnes dry sump circulate fluids through the engine.
    
   Some of the pros for the engine included, the engine being short so it added rear weight bias; better balancing; use standard Chevy heads (cut in half). 

   The cons were: weight not offset to the left; needed custom crank and cam.  The engine was also somewhat top heavy, raising the center of gravity of the ​car.
