Sweet 16 Chevrolet Built by the father-son team of Al Mathon Sr. and Jr. by merging two blocks, two steel crankshafts and four cylinder heads into a single unit. The engine has nine main caps instead of the normal five. The rear main on the block up front is shared with the number one main cap on the block in the rear.
One secret of ultimate V-16 smoothness was to weld the front and rear cranks with a 45 degree off-set to each other. The two camshafts carry the same off-set. The number one cylinder in the rear block fires exactly 45 degrees behind the number one cylinder in the front block. As a result the two firing orders intermingle and you get 16 power strokes every two rotations instead of 8.
The V-16 was designed specifically for low octane street use and two were known to be built by the Mathons and pulled just over 500 horsepower and 630 ft-lbs of torque.
